AAPSU and other orgs condemn arrest of Arunachal women, demands Govt intervention

ITANAGAR, Feb 5: After a joint inspection by the North East Students' Organisation (NESO) and All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) teams at Gerukamukh under Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh to study the ground reality of the ongoing boundary dispute and after close interacting with the locals on the spot from where the two local women were arrested on January 28 last by the Assam police and forest personnel, AAPSU termed the action as unfortunate and illegal.

Condemning the action in its strongest term as inhuman, AAPSU president Kamta Lapung claimed that the spot is well within the territorial jurisdiction of Arunachal Pradesh and the said land had been cultivated since time immemorial by the villagers. Therefore, there is no question of trespass into territory of Assam as claimed rather they (Assam) have trespassed into Arunachal territory in violation of the Supreme Court directive to maintain status quo.

The AAPSU urged the GoAP to pursue the case with its Assam counterpart for immediate release of both the women, who have been reportedly suffering from malaria and jaundice.

After interacting with the local denizens of Gerukamukh, it came to limelight that Assam forest and police personnel have been repeatedly adopting wrong tactic of physical and mental torture against the local denizens. Moreover, many a times they used to unnecessarily evict the local people from their dwelling houses and destroy their paddy fields within the territory of Arunachal Pradesh without having any order from the competent authority. AAPSU blamed the GoAP, particularly home department for its wrong and failure administration for the inability to protect its own people and its territory from the outsiders. The union urged the state  government  to immediately hold  a meeting with its Assam counterpart to  chalk out a proper strategy on how to  maintain  the  Supreme Court verdict  on  status  quo.

In the meantime, AAPSU requested the GoAP to deploy paramilitary forces at Gerukamukh to bring back normalcy along the inter-state boundary area.

Questioning the role of state as well as Union Home Minister if their offices were alive to the case, it wondered as to how the two women were arrested and detained in Lakhimpur jail since a week.

Meanwhile,  Arunachal Pradesh Border Students' Union (AAPBSU) president Atung Tana, All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU) president Kamta Lapung, NESO Coordinator Pritam Bhai Sonam, ZPM Dullungmukh Bei Tassap, Nido Donyak ASM, Executives Members of All Lower Subansiri Students' Union (ALSSU), All Raga Area Students' Union (ARASU) and general public of Dullungmukh in a meeting held at Keebare Community Hall Dullungmukh, Lower Subansiri district today unanimously urged the  state Govt to intervene for early release of two women, namely, Nido Yakum and Bini Yujum, who were arrested from Arunachal territory without any fault, said AAPBSU in a release.

Both the ladies were arrested recently from Dullungmukh under Lower Subansiri District by Assam police from their agricultural field within the territory of Arunachal Pradesh. They are now reportedly languishing in jail at North Lakhimpur, Assam. It is reported that both of them have been falsely booked under various section of the Forest Act and charged under non-bailable offence.

The meeting further demanded the Govt to constitute one-man facts finding committee to study to real facts behind the arrest of Arunachal ladies without any any provocation.

Blaming the state Govt for its alleged failure to protect the Arunachal people in boundary area, AAPBSU president Atung Tana said such incidents happen repeatedly because of lack of adequate police force at border areas to protect lives and properties of the people.

Meanwhile,  the Nyishi Nyem Acham (NNA) in a letter to the Chief Minister has urged  him to intervene for early release of two Arunachalee women Nido Yakum and Bini Yujum from North Lakhimpur jail.

The Arunachal Pradesh State Social Welfare Board (APSSWB) strongly condemned the recent arrest of Nido Yakum and Bini Yajum by the Assam Police without any concrete evidence.

The APSSWB  appealed  both the Assam and Arunachal Govts to take- up this matter on priority basis for early release of the ladies, The Board  also requested the National Commission for Women, State Commission for Women of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to initiate steps for amicable solution to the matter.

APSSWB  Chairperson Marina Nido said that they are being mistreated by the police in jail. APSSWB  Chairperson further said that that one of the ladies has 8 months old infant with her and keeping both of them in police custody is highly inhuman.

RGU launches awareness prog against opium

Children want opium free society

ITANAGAR, Feb 05: In an effort to motivate the local people to improve their life in the field of economy, health, better management of local resources, children educations, knowledge about their own rights and duties and awareness about their local environment, the  Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills has decided to  conduct  various outreach programme.

To begin with, this time, it has proposed to launch awareness program against prevalence of opium in the society and its harmful effects on health, economy and human value in  three districts -- Namsai, Lohit and Lower Dibang valley.

Initially a team of RGU headed by Prof. Tomo Riba, the Dean Faculty of Environmental Sciences, the Coordinator of Outreach Program of RGU and accompanied by Moriam Tamai, Ph. D. Scholar from RGU, Nashon Tamai and Debojit Minim from Indira Gandhi Government College Tezu conducted first program in Lohit and Namsai District from January 7 to 20 last. The main objective was to know how children  express their own views regarding opium in their society through drawing and in the form of essay writing. Accordingly, Coordinator covered 1100 students in 18 schools in Lohit and  Namsai district.

After evaluating the drawings and essays of 1100 students in two districts where the consumption of  opium is in its peak, the RGU team  came out with the  facts that all the students know that opium is a drug which kills addicts after robbing everything of the family and all of them do not want that their parents should consume opium.

According to them, opium addicts become lazy, do not work, remain at home. The students revealed that the addicts  become angry and quarrel with wife and children when they do not get opium in time. There is always shortage of food and other necessities in the family where parents consume opium and the addict parents first think of their opium only rather than the necessities of the family. During serious situation, when addict does not get opium, they even steal and  when addicts fall sick, it becomes difficult to take them to hospital due to lack of money. Finally they sell their land, after selling all the properties of the family, even the wives' ornament for opium.

Many children just follow their parents and many started jokingly and got addicted. Once one has become habituated, it is very difficult to leave it. Nowadays, opium is cultivated everywhere, even in the plain areas, especially by females for sale and family consumption, it is sold openly. Today opium is used in rituals and festivals. Priests use opium during ritual performance.

Police came to destroy opium field but they were driven away by the local women cultivators. Ultimately, after long run an addict ruins himself physically, financially, socially and  finally dies. The  students want that Government should  strict and punish cultivators, people those who sell opium and de-addiction camps should be arranged. Finally, all of them want drug free society.

During its outreach programme, the RGU team found that all children know prevalence of opium in their society. About 95 per cent of children do not support cultivation and consumption of opium. 100 % of children are against opium addiction.

It has never been taken seriously by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. It is more serious and dangerous than the insurgencies. But it is not a threat to government and leaders.

The team further found that local leaders turn their deaf ear and blind eyes to prevalence of drugs in their society. They don't want to displease their voters. Rather, opium and wine are the best items to please the voters during election campaign.

Opium has become part of culture in the society, it is cultivated openly and sold openly due to relaxation of law and many youths, including girls have started taking it.

Surprisingly, many government employees also consume opium that can be handled easily by the concerned authority. No parents want their children to smoke opium. Equally, no children want their parents to smoke opium. But it is consumed both by adult and young.

The team led by Prof. Tomo Riba, the Coordinator of Outreach Program of RGU felt the need  of political will to solve the problem.  "Today, it does not require much awareness program because it is not a new thing in the society. All know it, including small children. Strict and continuous implementation of narcotic act, organisation of de-addiction programs, other medical facilities to dissuade people from use of opium as medicine are to be initiated. For successful implementation of the above activities, it needs a realistic data collected from the source, they observed.

RGU will continue its efforts to reduce drug addiction, especially opium in the state of Arunachal Pradesh for which the support of local is very much necessary.

Even though BJP has apologize for terming NE people as ‘Immigrants’ in the party’s vision document for the Delhi election, the issue is having serious ramification. Whole of north-east are feeling outraged and are still feeling hurt over the use of word immigrant to address people of region. The North East Students’ Organization (NESO), an apex students’ body of seven North east states has condemned BJP for terming the people from North East as ‘Immigrants’.

NESO has demanded apology from top brass of BJP. Most of the citizens of NE states always feel alienated at mainland India due to racial discrimination. The vision document controversy has once exposed the attitude and mentality of mainland Indian towards NE people. Also many fear that 'immigrant' tag for people from the northeast will instigate insurgent groups to resort to violence and reiterate their demand for "independence". There are chances that people of NE region might extend support to the cause of these insurgent groups. Massive damage has been done and only time will tell how much impact this issue will have on the geo-political situation of north-east.

Grievances of a land donor

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the  attention of the  Chief Minister towards the  grievances of the  land donor for  Silsango circle  headquarter.

In a meeting between the  Mengio CO, Govt officials and  land donors of circle headquarters in presence of Silsango Circle Headquarter Development Committee, Gaon Burahs, public leadrs, youth, general public,   it was unaniously agreed to  fill up the candidature for the   group  C /D posts from among the   candidates of land donors. As per the  agreement reached in the meeting I, being a land donor, claimed a group D post for my  candidate. Accordingly  on June 7, 2011,  my candiate had submitted  application to  Papum Pare DC, Sagalee ADC, Zila chairperon and others for  appointment in grou D post, but since then authorities failed to make any appointment against my candidate  and there was not even a word of assurance for appointment.

Therefore, I being the victimised land donor  decided to oppose the posting of CO or any other officials to the Silsangso circle headquarter before  the steps are taken for appointment in group D post. I  have also decided and planning to take back my donated  land after being deprived of appointment in lie of land donation.

Yours,

Taw Nikam

Chairman,   Silsango Circle Headquarter Development Committee

An important landmark

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to express my heartiest congratulations to Tapang Taloh, Minister, Education, Govt, of Arunachal Pradesh for creating the Siang District. The creation of the new District is not only an important landmark for the people of Pangin-Boleng and Rumgong assembly constituencies but also for the entire Adi community. There is no denying of the fact that the credit for creating the new district goes to Tapang Taloh. It is to mention that thought there were several MLAs and other public leaders in the past but nothing substantial was done on the issue of creation of the new district. It will not be a fitness of thing if unnecessary allegation or criticism is levelled against the Minister, Education. On the other hand we should extend all possible help and co-operation to the Minister, so that development reaches new heights in the new district of “Siang District”.

While taking this opportunity, I would also like to thanks the  Chief Minister, Nabam Tuki for his kind gesture in gifting the new district of “Siang District” to the people of both Pangin- Boleng and Rumgong assembly constituencies.

Yours,

Tabang Pajing

Rumgong Village

Unaffordable fare

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I would like to express my agony about the private Passenger vehicle fare adopted in capital complex. We know the petrol price has been slashed but the fare for the trekker has remained the same. Student and public can’t afford their own vehicle so we need to go the college or office by these private vehicle and we have to pay large amount every day. The distance between the twin towns is only 10-15 km but we are paying 30 rupees per head. This is huge amount of money as compared to other states like Assam.

The authorities of private Vehicle have put the fare as they wished and nobody is bothered because it is the land of kushi-kushi. But the young generation needs to change this system of kushi-kushi. Therefore, I request the govt. of Arunachal Pradesh to look into the matter.

Yours,

common man,

Naharlagun
